As part of an interim assignment, Hyacint Consult Partner Famke Schaap guided the EU Public Affairs team at Samsung Electronics on trade and sustainability matters (Brussels, Belgium). As part of this cooperation, key focus was on:

Monitoring and influencing of EU legislative developments on sustainability due diligence (CSDDD), forced labour, CSRD (and ESRS reporting standards), as well as trade and customs barriers, export and import restrictions on raw materials and development of the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA).

Position the company in high-level policy debates and industry associations (Digital Europe ao) and organisations (RMI, OECD). Drive coalition-building on key topics of interest.

Supporting in-house awareness on relevant (EU) legislations and industry standards developments (RMI/RBA). Delivered internal training and awareness sessions (on EU policy on trade, customs and CBAM, sustainability due diligence ‘CSDDD’), prepare Q&A’s and information briefings.

Guide compliance efforts on trade sanctions (Russia), supply chain due diligence (Battery regulation, CSDDD, Forced Labour Regulation). Support content development and review of annual sustainability report and Conflict Minerals report.

External stakeholder engagement: Lead the process on Sustainability Stakeholders Requests: coordinate and complete responses to outstanding stakeholders requests on ESG matters ie GHG, decarbonization, conflict minerals compliance, CBAM, due diligence approaches, human rights, (Russia) trade sanctions, and develop responses regarding Sustainability Rankings (Corporate Human Rights Benchmark (CHRB) en Know the Chain (KTC).
Outcomes and take-aways:
The 6-month interim assignment, allowed the client to in-source targeted and on-the-job expertise, to position the company on highly political and dynamic EU policy files in relation to global trade, EU market access and sustainability. In times of dynamic changes on trade and sustainability, Hyacint Consult offered the monitoring and coordination that allowed the company to better anticipate impacts and prepare HQ in-house units for strategic decision-making and compliance.
